Off the Blocks - May 9
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psalm 139:13-14)
Dear Friends, I hope this finds you well. As we approach this Sunday I hope we can all think of someone we would like to share the greeting, "Happy Mother's Day!" I know this day can be a really happy day for some and for others it may be difficult. If it is a difficult day I hope you can either thank God for the good memories of your mom or think of a woman who made a great impact on your life (if not your mom maybe an aunt, Sunday School teacher, grandma or a friend).

There are a number of women who I can think of that helped me grow (and continue to grow) in my Christian faith, Sunday School teachers, my mom, Michele, family and friends. They have helped me realize a number of different lessons throughout my life (some were words of great encouragement other were words of tough love but both brought much insight).
Insightful lessons seems to be a common theme as I read about different people celebrating Mother's day — even movie stars like Denzel Washington. While promoting 2007's The Great Debaters, Washington was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey. Midway through their conversation, Washington noted the encouragement his mother had given him throughout his life. He also shared this story of his mother's reproof over his budding pride:
I walked in the house one day and — feeling full of myself, a movie star — I said to my mother, "Did you ever think this was all going to happen?" She was like, "Please. First of all, go wash the windows for me. You have no idea how many people have been praying for you when you were being a knucklehead."
It's always good to have words of encouragement but also someone to help us stay humble. This Sunday Night we'll be looking at four different women in the Bible who bring us some great insight for our spiritual lives. Have a blessed weekend and see you Sunday Night at 6 PM.
Grace and Peace, John
